There are pediatric subspecialists who focus in specific areas of medicine in order to become experts and become leaders in that area. These specialists conduct research, leadership trainings, conventions to educate other doctors, providers and professionals on their topic. These subspecialists are focused in order to work specifically at intervening, identifying and treating their area of focus with more rapidity and success.

The child abuse subspecialty has existed for 10 years (50 years behind those of other subspecialty groups such as oncology and cardiology.)

2/

There is no funding to support the research requirement for child abuse subspecialists.

3/

With an increase in funding for research, the field can expand its understanding and knowledge and will increase its resources, education and intervention methodologies for the field.

4/

These fellows are the future leaders in the field.  They will also need training in leadership and policy in order to be effective advocates for abused children and their famlilies.

What would happen if we integrated mental health into early systems?

1/

Studies show that when you address a potential problem in its earliest stages, your ability to correct, improve and end it, is tremendous.

2/

The same rings true for working with children

3/

In recent years we have gained so much understanding on early child development, brain neuroplasticity’s, and the significance of having one safe person in early years to depend who is both consistent and predictable can change the trajectory of a child’s life.

4/

Creating a therapeutic teaching environment in preschool systems for at risk children and families can do just the job in early intervention, stable support and long lasting resiliency

what would it take?

1/

We will collaborate with organizations like Zero to Three to expand therapeutic environments for the abused children known (or not known) to be in their preschools and day care facilities. Placing a licensed and specialized early intervention therapist into a series of classrooms to help integrate a therapeutic and safe atmosphere would have profound effects for the children in those programs.

Offering support and mental health intervention could be the best and most effective method of early intervention, early signs of concern and familial support that otherwise would not exist
